Bicycle for Education Program
VSC-Cameroon is partnering with YYC JUNK
who’s owners John and Kristine who strongly belief that “One person’s junk is another one’s treasure”. They also belief that nothing should be recycled or taken to the land fields if there is someone who can still use it. YYC JUNK is so environmentally friendly and considers climate change as one of the eminent threats to our world now.
Holding through to their company philosophy, YYC Junk
has decided to help kids in the developing world (Cameroon) by supporting the Bicycle 4 Education program with VSC- Cameroon. YYC Junk donates used bicycles and other products which could help empower kids in their quest for education. YYC Junk and VSC-Cameroon both hold the view that education is one of the key solutions to poverty reduction in less developed countries.
In this quest for education, some kids in Cameroon have mobility as a major barrier to achieve this goal. Some kids trek for about 15kilometers to and from school each day. Some of the consequences of this long distance trekking to school are; limited output because of tiredness and hunger as a result of long distance trekking to school, increased school dropouts rates and increased crime rates. The bicycles provided by YYC Junk through the Bicycle 4 Education program with VSC-Cameroon go a long way to ease transportation to and from schools.
Magic of Christmas Reachout Program
The Magic of Christmas is the closest program to the heart of the organization. It is an opportunity when VSC-Cameroon extents a helping hand to most of the poor and unprivileged members within the communities. This program is actually the bedrock on which the organization was founded decades ago. The act of giving back to the communities and especially to the less privileged members of the community has always been the core value of this organization.
Hundreds of people have benefited from this program. VSC-Cameroon during the Christmas season prepares and hand gifts to orphans, older adults, the sick, people with disabilities, prisoners etc within the communities. Most of these gifts are donations from individuals, businesses and organizations. This program melts the hearts of donors, volunteers when they come to realize how some members of the community live in accrued poverty.
School Assistance Program
VSC-Cameroon through their connections in Canada has been able to secure some used textbooks which they have donated to some elementary schools in Cameroon. We equally donate writing materials (pens, pencils, crayons, calk and exercise books) to individual pupils in need. We started paying school fees for some identified less privileged pupils and orphans with the communities.
Through VSC-Cameroons partnership with the Delegation of Basic Education in the North-West Region of Cameroon, we uncovered that the inability of most parents to acquire textbooks for their kids is affecting the standard of education in the province. VSC-Cameroon in September 2015 will be starting a place-based textbook sharing pilot project. VSC-Cameroon will buy textbooks for kids to borrow and use them during lessons within school period.
